With
the financial assistance from the UGC, the first phase of the University
Internet Centre was established in 1999 as a total turnkey project by
M/s CDAC, Bangalore, a Government of India organization. The service of
the Internet Centre is being availed by the Faculty, Researchers and
Students. So far more than 15,000 users have availed the facility and
there is a steady increase in the number of users. The services of
Internet are available between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. There are 20 Computer
Systems in the centre with 128 KB bandwidth connectivity. The newly
procured Computer Systems have been installed in place of old systems in
the Centre. This has enhanced the utility of the Internet Centre. The
Library building has LAN Connectivity.
The establishment of CD ROM Workstation is a novel step,
whereby user can get bibliographical data including abstracts. The
Library has a collection of 35 Silver Platter subject CD ROMs and 175
Textbook CDs on various subjects in the field of Social Science,
Humanities and Science are also available for browsing. The library is
extending the CD ROM browsing facility for the benefit of Teaching
Faculty, Research Scholars and Students. The Library also has acquired
quite good number of multimedia CD’s which are educative and informative
in nature. CD-ROMs which are main source of current information and are
in great demand by the Research Scholars. The details of the CD ROM
holdings in the library is given in the below table.

MANASA MEDIA
CENTRE:
To
provide accessibility to all educational channels (Edusat Programme)
for the benefit of the user community, University has established
Manasa Media Centre in the Library. The work related to the project
has been completed and ready to be commissioned.
Library Automation:
Mysore
Univeristy Library Automation Project has been initiated by
application of Library Software Package (LIBSYS) modules to all the
traditional divisions way back in 1996. The library has undertaken
the retrospective conversion of bibliographical data of its huge
backlog of over 4 lakhs books and journals as envisaged by
UGC-INFLIBNET, through its financial and professional assistance.
After creating about 50,000 data records, due to professional and
procedural lacuna the library shifted from LIBSYS Software to Total
Library Management Service (TLMS) software. With the TLMS software
about 1,70,000 records including the re-conversion of the data
created by the LIBSYS software have been converted into standard
data entry format. The process of computerization and automation of
the library activities/ services and holdings of the library has
been initiated and completed upto 75% by the library. From 2002 the
responsibility of Mysore University Library Automation Project (MULAP)
has been entrusted to Prof. Shalini R Urs vide University order No.
DV 3/119/2002-03/ Dt 29-6-2002 and 30-8-2002. The work related to
Automation process is being carried out under the guidance and
control of Prof. Shalini R Urs. After completion of the project and
handing over the digitized data to library the OPAC services will be
commissioned..
Digitization of Mysore University Library Collection:
Efforts have been
made for digitization of important holdings of the Library &
Historically important rare documents in collaboration with
International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Hyderabad
who came forward to take up digitization project under Digital
Library of India (DLI) Project. Correspondence have been made with
concerned officials of the Digital Library of India project who
have agreed to establish the scanning centre at Mysore University
Library for Digitization activities. Copies of the Memorandum of
understanding have been dispatched for signing between the
University and IIIT. The project may be commissioned very shortly
after obtaining the administrative approval from the University.
Rare and Archival Documents to be digitized have been listed
separately.

4. Technical
Section:
This section performs the major professional activities like
Classification, Cataloguing, Indexing and preparation of New Arrival
List etc., The Library is using DDC 21st
edition Schedule for Classification, AACR II for Cataloguing
Practice. The section also prepares New Arrival List (NAL) of books
procured by the library by utilizing various grants. The new arrival
list is being prepared both in print and CD format.

5. Stack
Area:
The major collection of the library is housed in different Stack
Areas. The Stack Areas further divided into two units viz Active
Stack Area, Controlled Stack Area, Kannada and Text Book Loan
Divisions.
1. Active Stack
Area: Latest text books and syllabus oriented reference
documents are housed in this section. Some very important and rare
documents have been kept under lock and key. This section has been
utilized heavily by large group of Students community.

2. The
Controlled Stack Area: This section houses mostly the old
documents organized under different disciplines. The collections of
this area have been arranged in four stacks (I to IV). The first
stack and ground floor area covers the subjects like Psychology,
Religion, Sociology, Law and Economics. The second stack covers
subjects like Management, Commerce, Literature, Education, History,
Geography and Biography. The third stack comprises books related
to Pure and Applied Science. (Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany,
Geology, Environmental Science, Bio-Chemistry, Microbiology,
Mathematics and Statistics, Library and Information Science
etc.,) Fourth stack area houses the books on various Indian
Languages viz., Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Sanskrit,
and Foreign languages like French, Russia, German, Persian and other
languages.

6. Reference
Documentation and Archival Section:
This is one of the very important and heavily referred sections by
the users. Some of the important collection of this section are :
Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Thesis and Dissertations, Reports of
various Committees and Commissions, Annual Reports, Gazetteers,
Census Reports, Maps, Atlases and Charts, General Knowledge Books,
Reference Books, Abstracting Journals are also houses in this
section. The special feature of this section is the collection of
rare and archival materials of historically important documents
related to history of the princely state of Mysore. Records of
British Empire, Archeological survey of India reports are some of
the important collections.
The
Section also houses the special collection on National leaders like
Mahathma Gandhi, Dr. B.R.Ambedkar, Nethaji Subhash Chandra Bose,
as well as on Human Rights and Women Studies. Books related to
General Knowledge, Question bank series on various Competitive
Examinations are housed in this section. Rare Paintings, Rare
Photographs and Reference oriented documents Biographical
collections on Scientist and eminent personalities are housed in
this section. The following collections are available in this
section. District census hand books, Karnataka Buddhist Tripitika 30
Volumes, Vaishnava India, California ISKCON, 1998, Speaker’s life
time, Library-New Jercy By Leonard, Encyclopedia Nobel Awardees,
Encyclopedia of Tribes and Tribals, Land & People of Indian States,
The Karnataka State Gazetteers( District Gazetters), Complete set
of Census Documents in Print and CD form.
The
unique collection of this section are “ Mysore Representative
Assembly (MRA) Reports, Mysore Archeological Reports(MAR), Epigraphy
Indica, Epigraphy Carnatica , Karnataka Inscription, Art and
Architecture, United Nations Reports, World Bank Reports,
Constituent Assembly Reports, Loksabha Debates, Tippu Sultan
Collection, Mysore History Collection, Sacred books of East by Max
Muller, K.M. Panikkar collection, Bombay and Madras Presidency
Gazetteers etc.
Thesis and Dissertations housed in the section are made available to
the Vidyanidhi Project for Digitization of the thesis for creation
of Web enabled bibliographical databases.

Books Display Programme: The Library is being
practiced a unique system of making arrangements of BOOKS DISPLAY
PROGRAMME in the Library
based on Important personalities, Events, Dates and on other rare
occasions. The Library books on such aspects will be
displayed in the library to create an awareness among the users
about the availability of the various resources.
Extension Services:
The library has carried
out the Following Extension Services. The unique feature of the
Library is to arrange the Books Display Programmes based on the
Important Occasions, Dates, Aspects and on Eminent Personalities.

8. Periodical Section:

Periodical section is one of the important sections, which presently
subscribes about 228 Indian Journals on specific recommendations by
the Chairpersons of the P.G. Departments. The total number of
journal holdings from the inception of the library is about
1,26,000. This section possess important reference oriented,
documents, magazines. This section houses very comprehensive
collection of the Gazettes starting from princely State of Mysore to
the present. At present this section procures 25 general magazines
and leading National and Local News papers. This section also
preserves the old News Papers upto 1 year by systematic filing. The
old back issues of the journals are temporarily stitched and shelved
on respective subject racks. The section also started News Paper
Clipping service.

Supplement etc., housed in this section.

The Special feature of the Section is the comprehensive collection
of the “The Karnataka State Gazette” dates back to old Mysore
Gazette.

9. Text Book Loan
Section:
The
library has maintained this section for the benefit of students
belongs to SC, ST and Other Economically Weaker sections. 5 text
books in the cognitive subjects will be issued to each student for a
period of one academic year.

Section:

All the
documents published in the Kannada Language has been housed in this
section. Total holdings of the section comes around 75,000. The
Literature published on and by Jnana Peetha Awardees and
Festschrift works of eminent personalities are housed in this
section. The section also houses the complete works of National
Poet Kuvempu.

Cubicles:
The
library has 12 Cubicles / Study rooms which are meant for the
benefit of Research Scholars. The each cubicles will be allotted to
two Research Scholars those who have completed two years of term.
